Very patient and understanding, easy to talk to and did not rush me at all. Was very explanatory about my condition and the operation. Came away from seeing Miss Collins feeling very at ease, safe and positive.

The level of care and consideration given to me by this surgeon has been outstanding. She immediately identified the issue with my spine, recognizing the level of pain I was experiencing and explained the possibility of incontinence and even paralysis if it was not dealt with promptly. She was reassuring about the possibility of a complete recovery following surgery and ensured she got me onto her list asap. Miss Collins visited me in the ward first thing in the morning and again last thing in the evening after the operation. She was positive and reassuring whilst not neglecting to point out that there was still an element of risk as in all such procedures. Having been very debilitated and restricted with sciatica I found immediate relief following the procedure and have been able to resume my usual lifestyle within a couple of weeks. I am extremely grateful to her for all she has done and the urgency it was dealt with.

I attended Morriston Hospital, Swansea today for a consultation with Miss Iona Collins. An explanation was given regarding my problem which was pitched perfectly for the lay person to understand, with a satisfactory solution given. I wasn't kept waiting for long. Had to have an x-ray with a radiology department working alongside outpatients, so, once again didn't have to wait. Was seen was immediately after the x-ray by Miss Collins with a plan. Fantastic service!

I would recommend Iona to anybody who is experiencing spinal problems. She is an incredible surgeon and an extremely caring and kind individual. Exhausts all options and doesn't give up until the issue is solved. Fantastic bedside manner; Iona was present after my surgery in recovery and it reassured me greatly. She has the utmost care and respect for each one of her patients and is extremely understanding. After having surgery just over a week ago, I can already notice the difference and have experienced no nerve pain in either leg. The best surgeon I have ever been treated by and can honestly not praise highly enough. I can only thank this fantastic lady for relieving me of my symptoms and giving me a promising pain free future!

Profile

I am a Consultant Orthopaedic Spinal Surgeon with a full time NHS practice based in Morriston Hospital, Swansea. The Swansea- based spinal service geographically serves the population of South West Wales from Bridgend to Aberystwyth.
I grew up in Llantrisant, South Wales and I was educated through the Welsh language education system. I subsequently moved to London and graduated from St. Bartholomew’s Hospital in 1996 with MBBS and BMedSci(Hons) degrees.
I completed my basic surgical training in 1997 in Oxford, gaining my MRCS certification. I then pursued orthopaedic specialisation firstly in New Zealand and then Scotland, before commencing a 6 year orthopaedic training rotation back in Oxford in 2002.
In 2006, following my FRCS(Orth) examinations, I chose to sub-specialise my further training purely in spinal surgery. My spinal fellowships were based in Oxford, Nottingham and Sydney, Australia, totalling two years.
I returned from Sydney in 2008 to take up my first consultant position at Queens Medical Centre, Nottingham. The opportunity to be a founding member of the newly-opened spinal unit in Swansea brought me back to my homeland of South Wales in 2011.
I have experience of delivering fully comprehensive spinal care, from cervical spine to sacrum. I offer clinical consultations, spinal expert witness services, spinal surgery, spinal injections and spinal cementing procedures along with appropriate aftercare. I have experience of spinal problems relating to physical training having been a keen sportswoman (Women’s captain St. Bartholomew’s Hospital Rowing Club, member of Lea Rowing club, Women’s vice-captain St. Bartholomew’s Hospital Squash club and member of Bicester Hockey club while training in Oxford).
